Softball Cheers for Players and Fans

All sports have some form of tradition associated with them. Cheers and chants play a major role in softball, adding more energy and excitement.

While softball cheers are mostly longer and include stunts or body movements, chants are shorter and repetitive throughout a certain action. The cheers and chants are often repeated to a rhythm or sung to the melody of some popular pop or folk song.

As a softball player or fan, learning softball cheers, chants, and songs can add a new dimension to the game. Many chants are like “earworms”; you can’t get ’em out of your head.

All About Softball Cheers

Chants and cheers motivate teams and thrill fans. They can also sometimes serve the dual purpose of getting under the other team’s skin.

A good cheer can reinforce a great play and serve to continue the momentum generated by a great play or big inning. Before you explore some exciting cheers and chants, let’s learn about their softball history.

See Practice Plans for Baseball: A Coach’s Best Friend.

History of Softball cheers and chants

The history of softball cheers and chants is almost as old as the sport itself. Fans and players began chanting during the initial phase when it was invented as an indoor game in the late 19th century. Since then, it has become a tradition to cheer on your own players to encourage strong play.

It has become an integral part of the game, and it’s hard to think of softball without all the associated cheers and chants coming from opposing benches.

Organized cheerleading began around the late 1860s, and softball was first played in 1887. Cheerleading was originally founded around supporting a football team, and male cheerleaders executed it. Surprisingly, it took more than three decades before women were allowed to become cheerleaders. That changed cheerleading forever.

Where softball differs from most other sports is that the cheers are generated by the players, not a separate set of cheerleaders. Cheerleaders are typically not seen leading the crowds at softball games.

As the cheers are generated by actual players, in some ways, they seem more genuine and reflective of the team’s current mood. Softball cheers are important in bringing the fans to life and inspiring players to perform their best.

Softball cheers have often been dubbed essential evils. But for many players, cheers enable them to release nervous energy, motivate teammates, and provide some encouragement.

Softball Cheers: When and How they’re Implemented

Softball cheers can be used anytime during the game to cheer up or cheer on your team. The chants and cheers become more aggressive when there is a change in leads and momentum or at various transition points in the game, e.g., when a new pitcher takes the mound or a new hitter steps to the plate.

Although it’s for fun and to make everyone feel more involved in the game, certain unannounced rules are generally recognized. These include:

  • Both fans and players should avoid the use of profanity.
  • It is also recommended not to pick on individuals or take it to a personal level, especially based on a player’s physical attributes.
  • Keeping it positive about your team is strongly encouraged vs. wishing ill will on an opponent.

Cheering is an integral part of softball, but it has some limits. It is no longer part of the game if it is intended to denigrate a player or become personal.

Anyone can cheer a team. You may be part of the squad or a spectator who wants to cheer their team from the stands. Softball cheers are for everyone who has team spirit. Cheers add energy to the event, inspire your team to perform better, and put on a better show. Here are some exciting softball cheers and chants to have more fun the next time you are enjoying a game or playing out on the field.

The Coaching Benefits of Practice Plans

1.) Saves you time.

2.) Enables you to coach in the moment. You don't have to think about what to do next — it's already listed out for you.

3.) Work with a proven system. Our authors are coaches who have been there and done that. They know what works, the best order to teach skills and what doesn't work.

4.) Your players get better quicker. It's all about player development, but it's kind of fun to win a lot!

5.) Leap ahead on the learning curve. It took John Wooden over 10 years to produce his first champion.

Fortune favors the prepared. Find out more about sports practice plans for baseball, basketball, soccer and softball.

What Folks are Saying

“I coach 5th and 6th grade basketball and after winning only 3 games the previous 2 years combined, I began using your structured practice plans each week and now we are now one game away from the league championship!”

Mike Jadach
JV Coach Assumption School, Ansonia, CT

“Your basketball practice plans are fantastic! Many youth coaches are pressed for time and these organized practice plans help me to run an efficient practice with little preparation time needed. Not only are the plans efficient for coaches, but the drills have paid dividends for our players. I really appreciate the work put into these.”
